As of 2007, both the 2003
Reclamation and the 2005 Reclamation well exceed the standard.
With regard to Alternative Test C), the similarity index between the lifeform species density values
for the prescribed lifeforms for the 2003 Reclamation and the weighted average for the reference
areas is 72.8%. Since this value greater than 90% of the standard (0.9 x 70% = 63%),
Alternative Test C) is passed for the 2003 Reclamation. For the 2005 Reclamation the Index
of Similarity is 69.5%. Since this value greater than 90% of the standard (0.9 x 70% = 63%),
Alternative Test C) is passed for the 2005 Reclamation also.
With regard to Alternative Test D), the total number of native species encountered in the seven
100 sq. m. (2m x 50 m) samples of the 2003 Reclamation was 48, which is greater than the
average species density of even the Aspen reference area (38.8 species per 100 sq.m., Table
14). Hence, Alternative Test D) is passed for the 2003 Reclamation. For the 2005
Reclamation, the total number of native species encountered in the twelve 100 sq. m. (2m x 50
m) samples was 38, nearly equaling the average species density of the highest component of the
reference area (Aspen with 38.8 species per 100 sq.m., Table 14). Hence Alternative Test D) is
nearly passed for the 2005 Reclamation.
In summary for the 2003 Reclamation, Mandatory Test A) was passed as were Alternative Tests
B), C), and D) and hence the species diversity test as a whole is passed for that area of four-year
old reclamation. For the 2005 Reclamation, Mandatory Test A) was passed as were Alternative
Tests B) and C). Test D) was barely failed, but inasmuch as the permit requirement would
necessitate passing A) plus two of the other three, the 2005 Reclamation also as a whole passes
the species diversity test.
Sample Adequacy
A summary of sample adequacy calculations for the parameters of cover, herbaceous production,
and woody plant density is presented in Table 16 (Appendix 1). As can be seen in this table, the
15
