3.0 HISTORIC WATER USE
- Complete diversion records for the Boxelder Ditch from 1950 through 2001 were available
from the State Engineers Office. The diversion records were used to calculate the pro-rata deliveries
to the Timnath Pit property. John Weitzel farmed the property from 1963 to 1989 as both the owner
and, later, as a tenant. Mr. Weitzel was able to provide information on irrigated acreages and, as
former President o~f the Boxelder, insight into the operation of the ditch. A study period of 1960 to
1989 was chosen to coincide with John Weitzel's cultivation of the farm. The period is logical
because of the availability and reliability of information on farming practices and the proximity to
when farming stopped and present activities began. The study period includes 30 years of
precipitation data including several wet and dry years.
31 Diversion Records
Diversion :records at the 8-foot Parshall Flume for the Boxelder Ditch. at the river diversion
were available from the SEO for the period from 1950 through 2001. The average annual diversion
for the 1960 through 1989 period is 7,1.51.3 AF. No individual delivery records are available for the ,
Timnath Pit property for the study period. Farm deliveries were calculated as the pro-rata amount
due to 3 %2 out of 64 shares of the Boxelder minus estimated transportation loss. The transportation
loss, estimated through experience and engineering judgment, was 10% of the diversion. The
average annual delivery to the property for-the 1960 through 1989 period was 352.0 AF.
3.2 Irrigated .Acreage
The historic irrigated acreage on the Timnath Pitproperty was determined through interviews
with John Weitzel and from aerial photographs produced by the Farm Services Agency, Natural
Resources Conservation Service. Mr. Weitzel was able to delineate on the aerial photographs which
parcels on the property were used to cultivate various crops and which parcels were not irrigated.
The photographs ~~vere analyzed based on this guidance, and the areas of the various parcels were
determined. The. farm and parcel areas are shown in Figure 3.1. Table 3.1 lists the parcel
designations and irrigated acreages.
C:\Projects\CODKCOI\Adrnin\DKC 2006 SWSP Application.doc 4 Scott Water Engineers
