Logan Wash Mine Annual Report
Permit No.: M-1977-424
For more information regarding the Research Mine portal closure and management of the
Research Mine drainage see Technical Revision (TR) No. 4 and TR No. 6 which present
significant revisions to Exhibit E, the Reclamation Plan for Logan Wash Mine.
3.2 Mine-Water and Retort-Water Discharge
Discharge measurements of clean (non-retort) mine-water discharge (Outfalls 001, and 002) and
retort-water discharge were conducted on a quarterly basis when possible. These data were
collected by OOSI to assess and evaluate mine closure effectiveness and to support operation and
maintenance of the evaporation pond.
Sampling of retort mine drainage water and mine water (Outfa11001) was conducted in October
2007 to evaluate retort water quality and contribute to long-term trend analysis. The samples
were collected from the retort drainage pipelines inside the Lower Bench Vault. The analytical
results indicated no significant improvement of retort water compared to past sampling events.
4.0 Reclamation Activities in 2007
Reclamation activities conducted at the Logan Wash Mine in 2007 are discussed in the following
sections.
4.1 Revegetation Maintenance
During the reporting period the irrigation system for planted saplings on the Upper and Lower
Mine Dumps was reemployed. Polyethylene tanks were set in place and piping was installed to
collect and store. mine water for irrigation of saplings on mine dump faces. Research Mine
discharge water (NPDES Outfa11002) was diverted to polyethylene tanks on the Lower Bench,
and L-1 Portal mine discharge water (NPDES Outfall 001) was captured in the Lower Bench
Vault through the use of a small polyethylene tank. Maintenance of the plant irrigation system
included general repairs or improvements and winterization in the fall.
Irrigation of saplings planted on the mine dump faces was conducted periodically in June and
July. Repairs were conducted to pumping and other irrigation system components when
necessary.
In mid-May, reseeding (second seeding) of the Upper Bench Road was conducted followed by
mechanical straw mulch spreading and crimping.
4.2 Well Abandonment
During the reporting period, monitoring Wells LW-102, LW-104, and LW-243, located at outside
the mine permit area, were abandoned in accordance with state rules and regulations. At well site
LW-243, OOSI also removed old stream gauging materials (corrugated metal pipe). At the
request of the land owner, Well LW-103 was not abandoned; well ownership will be transferred
to the private land owner.
5.0 Maintenance Activities
Maintenance activities included periodic inspections of mine roads, portals, mine water drainage
systems associated with the retorts and general mine workings, as well as inspection of general
Western Water 8~ Land, Inc. 5
