• northeast trendin a hemeral drainages. Bounding the mesa to the west and
9 P
southwest are the steeply sloping foothills of the Wet Mountains. Major
ephemera') drainages intersecting the Southfield mine area, have their
headwaters in the Wet Mountains.
The loadout area is located on the stream divide between Chandler Creek
to the-north and Oak Creek to the south, well above the floodplain of the
nearby Arkansas Rivera This area exhibits topographic characteristics
similar to the mine area and can be considered part of the same high
plains mesa topographic province.
Geologic Structure
The mine plan area, shown on the Mine Area Geology Map (Map 8), is located
in the southern part of the physiographic area known as the Canon City
basin. lfhis area is a structural basin bounded on the west and south by
. the overthrust faults of the Wet Mountains, and to the north by the Front
Range uplift. The basin .is asymmetric, gently dipping from the east with
moderate to steep dips on the west corresponding to the Wet Mountain
overthrust. The general geologic structural setting is shown on Figure
2, Geolagic Structural Setting.
The mine plan area is located along the east flank of the Wet Mountains
adjacent to the axis of the north plunging Chandler Syncline. The
syncline parallels the trend of the Wet Mountain Fault to the west.
Strata on the northeast limb of the syncline dip gently to the west at
approximately 5 degrees. The southwest limb of the syncline dips very
steeply and in some cases strata on this limb are overturned. Dips in the
southwest limb range from 45 degrees northwest, as measured underground
to 85 degrees overturned southwest as measured at outcrop. The Southfield
operations have intercepted the synclinal axis in the south submains and
at numerous points along the west ends of the south mining panels.
• The Wet Mountain overthrust fault .results in pre-Cambrian materials
unconformably overlying overturned sedimentary units on the southwest limb
of the Chandler Syncline.
