III. COMMENTS-COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations made during the
inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the inspection and the facts or
evidence supporting the enforcement action.
This was a partial inspection conducted by Joe Dudash of the Colorado DRMS. The Hawk's Nest
Mine is a revoked/forfeited mine site that has been reclaimed. As of October 22, 2005, the inspection
frequency was formally reduced to one complete inspection and three partial inspections per year.
Roads
Access to the reclaimed mine site is by old State Highway 133. The snow was graded off of the road.
A few rocks had fallen onto the road but the road was passable. The mine site itself does not have any
roads.
Reclamation
The reclaimed mine site has two sections, the east mine area and the west mine area. Practically the
entire reclaimed site was covered in snow. There were no obvious indications of slope instability or
erosional gullying.
Hydrology
In the west mine area, the sediment pond was covered in snow. The two old state highway road
culverts and riprapped outlets were also covered in snow. No problems were observed.
Slides and Damage
The mudslide in the road cut north of the old state highway had been moving recently and was very
wet at the time of the inspection. A pool of water was at the base of the mudslide. Apparently, the
mudslide had flowed onto the old state highway and had been graded off to the south side of the road.
Signs and Markers
Because the permit was revoked and the bond was forfeited, there are no mine ID signs or surface
disturbance markers.
c:/word/hawksnest/insp0308
