• Map 8, Cross-Section Lines and Drill Hole Locations Map. The data
describes the lithologic characteristics and thickness of coal and other
strata within the permit area.
Physical Properties of the Roof and Floor Material
The Vermejo formation is the coal bearing formation throughout the
Canon City ~~nd Florence region. Specific physical analysis
(engineeringa properties) of immediate roof and floor clays. or clay
shales is no+t available at the time of this submission. Exploration
activities, conducted in 2005 and 2007, indicate that these clayey
strata are only present in the immediate floor strata at the NF-02 drill
hole, adjacent to the decline location. Samples obtained from this hole
in 2007 did not withstand laboratory physical testing.
Northfield commits to sampling and testing any clay or clay shale
strata as appropriate, and presentation of engineering properties,
when access to the seam is established during initial development
activities. Northfield understands the importance of the information in
conjunction with a safe and stable underground mine operation.
All required information regarding the physical properties of the roof
and floor cl<~y or clay shale strata will be submitted to the Division
when available, and included in reserved Exhibit AH.
chemical Analyses of the Roof and Floor Material
Northfield conducted coal exploration activities during 2007, in
accordance with NOI X-2005-226-00. Core samples of the Ocean Wave
seam and tlhe immediate roof and floor strata were obtained for
analysis and description. Overburden geochemistry analysis were
conducted on the strata immediately above and below the coal seam in
accordance with the parameters described in the Division's Guidelines
for the Collection of Baseline Water Quality and Overburden
Geochemis~`ry Data, issued Sept. 16, 1982.
Lmmediate roof and floor composite samples from three core holes
were analyzed for the parameters mentioned above. Samples were
prepared bey compositing representative increments from
approximately the first ten (10) feet of strata overlying the coal seam,
and approximately the first five (5) feet o the strata underlying the
coal seam. Lithologic descriptions of the roof and floor at the three
core holes its provided earlier in this section under the subtitle ~~The
Ocean Wave Coal Seam".
• A total of 6 Northfield com osited roof and floor samples were
P
analyzed comprising 3 floor samples and 3 roof samples. Laboratory
2.04-14 Revised 8/20/07
