Characteristics of Coal and Overburden
Northfield has utilized geologic data from various sources obtained
between 1976 and 2005 to evaluate physical and chemical
characteristics of coal and non-coal strata within the Northfield permit
area. The rnajority of this data is the result of exploration and drilling,
geophysical logging and laboratory analyses of coal.
The Ocean Wave Coal Seam
The NorthfiEld project proposes developing the Ocean Wave reserve
that lies below the Royal Gorge coal seam and above the Canon City
coal seam. The seam is low to moderate sulfur content and low to
moderate a;sh. The coal ranges in thickness. from 4 to 6.5 feet. The
Ocean Wave seam displays a thin over rider ranging from 0.5 to 1.5
feet in some areas. Substantial exploration of the area has occurred
over the years by property owners and prospective coal developers.
The following lithologic description of the immediate roof and floor is
data from exploration that occurred in 2005 and 2007. Additional data
is available upon request.
•
•
Drill Hole Upper Roof Target Floor
ID Ftider ascendin strata Seam descendin strata
NF-01 1.5 ft. 4.3 ft. sandstone/ 4.3 ft. coal 1.2 ft. sandstone/
South shaley siltstone siltstone
coal 1.5 ft. shaley coal 8 ft. interbedded
3.0 ft. siltstone sandstone
4.0 ft. sandstone/
siltstone
NF-02 G.5 ft. 6.0 ft. interbedded 4.8 fit. coal 10.3 ft. mudstone
East coal sandstone
2.0 ft. sandstone
0.5 ft. coal
NF-03 7.5 ft. siltstone/ 5.2 ft. coal 1.5 ft. siltstone
North interbedded 15.5 ft. sandstone
sandstone
4.0 ft. sandstone/
interbedded siltstone
and mudstone
The in-place coal reserve in the Ocean Wave is divided into two
reserve blocks, North and South, that are separated by an in seam
split that may exceed 4 feet in thickness. This split corridor trends
roughly southwest to northeast and averages 3000 feet in width. The
North Reserve Block is bounded by thinning coal to the north and the
seam split i:o the west, south and east. The South Reserve Block is a
2.04-12 Revised 8/20/07
