• Two sets of laboratory data are attached to this report. Set 1 samples constitute the soil
portion of the samples. They were delivered to IML on October 17 and reported on
November 12, 2007. They include the 4 reapplied soil samples from the Yoast Mine (0
to 8" and 8 to 17" for Y-TS-07-P1; and 0 to 6" and 6 to 12" for Y-TS-07-P2) and the 6
reapplied soil samples from the 2W Mine (0 to 6" and 6 to 14" for 2W-TS-07-P1; 0 to 7"
and 7 to 15" for 2W-TS-07-P2; and 0 to 8" and 8 to 18" for 2W-TS-07-P3). Set 2
samples constitute both the 5 samples of mixed reapplied soil and overburden spoil, and
the underlying 10 overburden spoil samples from both the Yoast and 2W Mines. These
samples were delivered to IML on October 17 and reported on November 28, 2007. The
samples include: 17 to 30", 30 to 50", and 50 to 72" for Y-TS-07-P1; 12 to 18", 18 to
40", and 40 to 64" for Y-TS-07-P2; 14 to 24", 24 to 48", and 48 to 72" for ZW-TS-07-P1;
15 to 24', 24 to 35", and 35 to 72" for 2W-TS-07-P2; and 18 to 32", 32 to 52", and 52 to
72" for 2W-TS-07-P3. Data for an approximate 10 percent rerun on all samples for
QA/QC purposes are on file at IML. An email from Karen Secor (IML soils lab), dated
November 28, 2007, indicated that due to a technician error the remaining sample
material for 2W-TS-07-P2 (35 to 72") was spilled and there could be no subsequent
analysis for Se, B, or NO3.
Reapplied Topsoil/Overburden Spoil (Baclchoe Pits) Suitability Evaluation Results:
All 10 reapplied topsoil samples collected from backhoe pits in 2007 have "good-rated"
suitability. For the 2W Mine, soil reaction (pH) ranges from 6.8 (neutral) to 7.1 (neutral),
• with an average pH of 7.0 (neutral). For the Yoast Mine, pH ranges from 6.8 (neutral) to
7.4 (slightly alkaline), with an average pH of 7.0 (neutral). For the underlying mixed
zone of reapplied topsoil and regraded overburden spoil (most often the third layer down
in the profile), pH averages 7.3 (neutral) for Yoast, and 7.4 (slightly alkaline) for 2W.
For the underlying spoil in the lowest part of the backhoe pits, pH averages 7.3 (neutral)
for Yoast, and 7.3 (neutral) for 2W.
For the 2W Mine, electrical conductivity (EC) is very low for the soil layers with a range
of 0.21 (nonsaline) to 0.5 (nonsaline), with an average EC of 0.34 (nonsaline). EC ranges
from 0.42 (nonsaline) to 2.48 (very slightly saline) in the underlying mixed zone, with an
average of 1.78 (nonsaline). For the underlying spoil in the lowest part of the backhoe
pits, EC ranges from 2.41 to 3.07 (very slightly saline), averages 2.85 (very slightly
saline). For the Yoast Mine, EC is very low for the soil layers with a range of 0.22 to
1.43 (nonsaline), with an average of 0.61 (nonsaline). For the underlying mixed zone,
EC ranges from 0.85 to 2.99, with an average of 1.92 (nonsaline). For the underlying
spoil in the lowest part of the backhoe pits, EC ranges from 1.57 (nonsaline) to 3.97 (very
slightly saline), with an average of 2.7 (very slightly saline).
For all reapplied soil samples, soil texture is primarily silt loam (8 samples), with one
additional sample being clay loam and another sample silty clay loam. Texture of the
mixed zone is gravelly to very gravelly or cobbly to very cobbly silt loam, clay loam, or
silty clay loam. Texture of the underlying lowest overburden spoil is very to extremely
. cobbly silt loam, clay loam, or silty clay loam. Saturation percents range from 37.9 to
52.6 percent for all soil layers, with an average of 44.0 percent, and from 36.2 to 51
3
