REVEGETATION
• ~ • Seeding and Shrub Planting
•
A total of 224.7 acres were seeded in 2007. The majority of the area was seeded with approved Seed Mix No.
1 (see Table 07.2, Seed Mix No. 1 for constituents). In addition, winter wheat was added as a cover crop at
201bs/acre to the Seed Mix 1. Seed Mix No. 2, Mesic Drainage/Riparian, was used along the constructed
portions of postmining channels (see Table 07.3, Seed Mix No. 2 for constituents).
Of the 224.7 acres seeded/planted, 3.0 acres are newly established shrub plots. These areas were hand seeded
with Concentrated Shrub Seeding Mix No. 6 (see Table 07.4, Seed Mix No. 6 for constituents).
Shrub Plots. Approximately 10,254 seedlings and 2,000 one gallon sized shrubs and trees were planted at II-
W during 2007. Locations of the sites are shown on the attached 2007 Chronological Seeding map.
Following is a breakdown indicating the number of species planted in each area.

S ecies 2007-1
Fenced
2007-2
2007-3
2007-4 2006-2
Fenced 2005-1
Fenced
Total
As en-1 1 2,000 0 0 0 0 0 2,000
Chokeche 1,000 0 0 0 1,000 1,000 3,000
Cottonwood 0 500 500 500 0 0 1,500
Gambels Oak 774 500 0 0 0 200 1,474
Serviceber 750 0 0 0 750 750 2,250
Sumac 0 390 0 0 0 390 780
Willow 0 500 750 0 0 0 1,250
Total 4,524 1,890 1,250 500 1,750 2,340 12,254
Aspen Test Plot. During the fall of 2004, 400 selected aspen trees were planted according to the plan and
timetable included in the Seneca II-W permit document. The study continued to examine growth, survival,
and water status during the 2007 growing season. The results for 2007 are in the attached 2007 Aspen Study.
• Monitoring
ESCO Associates, Inc conducted revegetation monitoring of permanently revegetated areas and shrub
establishment monitoring in the shrub plot areas during the summer and fall of 2007. The 2007 Annual
Revegetation Monitoring Report will be submitted as a separate document.
• Weed Control
A survey for noxious weeds was carried out on the II-W mine area in the spring of 2007. Monitoring was
conducted to determine the need or level of re-treatment necessary for the areas sprayed in 2006.
Canada thistle was the primary target species in all control areas, with lesser activity directed toward areas of
hounds tongue and whitetop. The applied herbicide consisted of a tank mix of Z.5 gallons of 22K Tordon
and 2.5 gallons of 2,4,D and 250 gallons of water. Escort, at the rate of one (1) ounce per acre was spot
sprayed on whitetop. Control areas were sprayed in May, June, and July. See the attached 2007 Weed Spray
Location map for the extent of weed control spraying.
. A spot spray gun was used to concentrate spraying activities on target areas, reducing potential impacts to
adjacent desirable vegetation. The herbicide mix, based on recommendations from the Colorado State
Extension Service, was mixed and applied by an outside contractor who is a certified applicator. The weed
control areas will continue to be monitored in 2008 for effectiveness and necessary retreatment. See the
