The coal ranges in thickness from 4 to 6.5 feet. The in-place coal
reserve in the Ocean Wave seam is divided into two reserve blocks, North and South,
separated by an in-seam split that may exceed 4 feet in thickness. Overburden
thickness ranges from around 300 feet in the northeast portion of the planned mining
area to over 900 feet in the southwest, with an average thickness of about 700 feet.
Surface topography is typical of the area with generally flat topped mesas dissected by
canyons and arroyos flanked by resistant sandstone cliffs and steep, brush-covered
slopes. Elevations range from approximately 5200 feet to 6000 feet.
The main geologic feature in the permit area is Chandler syncline that lies southeast of
the permit area. The permit area lies on the gently dipping east flank of the syncline
axis. Faulting is present in the general area but is not known to be significant in the
permit area.
7
