Overall within the 1999 reclamation areas, Calamovilfa longifolia was dominant, with
contributions of 18.00 percent mean and 41.98 percent relative cover. Seven additional
species contributed significantly to cover, including; Bromus tectorum with 13.00 percent
mean vegetation cover and 18.95% relative cover, Kochia scoparia contributing 5.20 percent
mean total cover (7.87% relative cover), Ambrosia psilostachya with 4.00 percent mean
cover (7.00% relative cover), Agropyron smithii (western wheatgrass) providing 2.80 percent
mean and 4.37 percent relative cover, Andropogon hallii and Helianthus annuus each
providing 2.00 and 3.50 percent mean and relative cover, respectively, and Bouteloua gracilis
contributing 1.80 percent mean cover and 3.50 percent relative cover.
Vegetative litter (prior years growth, dead wood, and other biologic organic material)
comprised 29.80 percent ground cover overall within the 1999 reclamation areas. Bare soil
comprised 15.80 percent of the ground cover. No rock or cryptogams were encountered
during the cover sampling in the 1999 reclamation areas.
3.1.3.2 Herbaceous Production
Overall mean total herbaceous production within the 1999 reclamation areas was 150.84
g/m2 (1344 lb/ac).
3.1.3.3 Species Composition
Cover sampling identified three lifeforms and 19 species within the 1999 reclamation azeas.
The lifeforms included ten species of perennial graminoids, one annual grass, one perennial
forb, one biennial forb, five annual forbs, and one succulent. Of the species encountered on
the 1999 reclamation areas, thirteen were native and six were introduced. Perennial species
outnumbered annual species by twelve to six, with one biennial species. Cool season species
were slightly more prevalent than warm season species (10 cool season to 8 warm season)
this yeaz in the 1999 reclamation azeas. Warm season graminoid species accounted for seven
species and cool season species included four species. Six forb species were identified as
cool season and one was warm season. The succulent was evergreen.
The 1999 reclamation areas had eight species contributing greater than three percent relative
cover this yeaz. These species included Calamovilfa longifolia with 41.98 percent relative
cover, Bromus tectorum with 18.95% relative cover, Kochia scoparia (7.87%), Ambrosia
psilostachya (7.00%), Agropyron smithii (4.37%), Andropogon hallii, Helianthus annuus and
Bouteloua gracilis (3.50% each).
3.1.4 2000 RECLAMATION AREAS
The 2000 reclamation azeas sampled this year encompass 7.3 acres of reclamation in two
distinct areas within the Keenesburg Mine permit area. The azeas include Area 6, a former
haul road along the southeast boundary of the mining area and Area 19, another former haul
road in the center of the reclaimed mining azea. Vegetation cover transects and herbaceous
production quadrats were distributed within the two areas based on size. The 2000
reclamation azeas range from flat to gently sloping (<1 to 2°). Reseeding or interseeding with
the permanent seed mix took place in 2003 within these areas with the goal of increasing
Coors Energy Compa-y Keenesburg Mine Page 13
2007 Revegetation Monitoring Report
