Mud Creek Pit -Reclamation Permit Application 112 ((') Exhibits Page 28 of 67
• An ephemeral unnamed tributary of Mud Creek located to the north of the site, flows west into the East Fork of
Mud Creek. This tributary has a drainage area of approximately 500 acres, or 0.1 % of the total Mancos River
Drainage of 512,000 acres. It presently drains about'h the site, about 75 acres. Proposed mining and
reclamation would remove approximately half of this (38 acres) from normal surface discharge into the Creek,
reducing surface drainage area by approximately 8%. As this is an ephemeral stream and surface runoff would
be replaced in large part by subsurface runoff, this has no significant impact on the total Mud Creek or Mancos
River flows, and therefore is not s~nificant. _
-~
FIGURE G-1.
Mancos River Watershed (showing
both Upper and Lower Mancos).
Red circle shows location of Mud
Creek Pit.
(r -' ~'^~
f
The decision to do no mining in the swale and on the slope above the Swale in the northeast buffer zone will
further reduce any potential impacts on surface water, since flows (both surface and subsurface) from the series
of three ponds off-site will not be blocked, diverted, or reduced.
• The series of three ponds located immediately east of the site are fed by a combination of natural surface runoff
and irrigation water, both return flows and flows specifically intended for use in maintaining these ponds. These
ponds may also receive water from now-submerged natural springs at the top of the Mancos Shale. Mining
operations have been designed to avoid impacts to these ponds and their dams.
• References:
http llcfpub epa qov/surf/huc.cfm?huc code=14080107
http llbioloov unm edulstacey/Functional%20Assessment%20of%20the%20Mancos°~20River%20Watershed.pd
f
htt~:"www usbr govlucllibrarylenvdocslea/mancos valley/
State databases: http~l1165 127 23 411websitellttoolslindex asp?iw=800&ih=600
htt~'~165.127.23.41-StatelMS (Colorado's Decision Support Systems)
'T'able G-?.
