WALKER
The purpose of this letter is to provide additional information to the Division of
Reclamation, Mining and Safety (DRMS) regarding soil contamination at the above-
referenced site. The approximate location of the site is shown on Figures 1 and 2 which are
attached to this report. An approximate 10,000-gallon diesel-fuel above-ground storage tank
(AST) was utilized at the site by Aggregate Industries - WCR, Inc. (Aggregate Industries)
for the fueling of on-site machinery and vehicles. During the reconciliation of the April
2001 inventory records for the AST, it was discovered that a release had occurred from the
diesel-fuel system. The release was investigated by Aggregate Industries personnel
beginning on May 1, 2001 and was confirmed on May 7, 2001. The release was reported to
the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) on May 8, 2001.
Based on information provided by Aggregate Industries, the volume of the diesel-fuel spill
was estimated to be approximately 10,840 gallons and reportedly occurred over a relatively
short period of time from mid-March to the end of Apri12001.
Approximately 2,000 cubic yards of contaminated soil was excavated from the spill area
between May 8, 2001 and May 31, 2001 and stockpiled at the site for use in asphalt paving
mix. Approximately 103,000 gallons of groundwater/free-phase product mixture was also
pumped from the excavation during the abatement activities. Soil and groundwater sample
results from the abatement excavation were discussed in the July 6, 2001 Soil and
Groundwater Abatement Report.
ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING AND GEOHYDROLOGY
