6. Mitigation of Surface Coal Mining Operations Impacts
The reclamation activities will not have an adverse impact on the air quality in the area. The area is
• vegetated. No air quality permits are required
The impact on wildlife in the area will be negligible as the only activity is monitoring of the water
quality and inspections of the site. The area disturbed is revegetated so there is more forage available
for the wildlife. More forage is available as the area had been previously disturbed and not reclaimed.
The power lines serving the mine have been removed so there will be minimal impact on raptors.
There are no known threatened or endangered species of plants or animals listed by the Secretary under
the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended, located within the permit area.
No discharges of water have occurred since the mine was sealed. The information presented in the
water quality section shows that the impact on the hydrologic balance will be minimal. The steep dip of
the strata n the area puts the water producing zones (coal seams) below the depth of any domestic,
stockwater, or irrigation wells located in the area.
During the first ten years of the permit, no concentrated flow of water has been encountered in the
underground workings. Mine water discharge and surface water sampling show no impact on the
hydrologic balance.
There are no historic/cultural resources listed in the National Register of Historic Places in the permit
area or adjacent areas.
The structures located in the permit area which would be adversely affected by subsidence are County
Road 237, Grass Valley Reservoir„ and Harvey Gap drainage. No mining has occurred under these
structures. Therefore no subsidence will occur under these structures due to mining.
Renewal #3 02/08/2000 116
