where all variables are the same as previously described;
the value of 0.1 in the denominator represents the
detectable change in the sample mean, which in this case is
still ten percent.
The vegetation cover data for this study:
<t.20)2C2s2)
number of samples
C1.73)2 C2)2
6
[(.10) (69.6)]2
10 samples
•
•
As shown, sampling was adequate even to meet this more
stringent requirement.
Monthly precipitation data from the Rifle Weather Station is
submitted with the baseline data. The precipitation data
documents that the sampling year was not a below average
precipitation year (see Table 16t Precipitation Records).
When reclamation is nearing completion, the same sampling
methods will be used. Th• same methods will develop
consistent values with the vegetation baseline study. If
the area exhibits an unusually high percentage of cover due
to the sagebrush cover, an alternate method of determining
revegetation success may be determined. An alternative
method would b• one based on standards set by the Soil
Conservation Service and Colorado State University Range
Management to prevent erosion of reclaimed areas.
Vegetation - Environmental Factors. The environmental
factors that control or limit species distribution include
physiographic features, climate features, soils, and usage
stability. The physiograpic features of the site include
moderately steep to very steep hillsides. Slopes range from
IS% to 70%. Those slopes in the affected area usually face
south or west. The elevation ranges from 5,000 feet to
7,000 feet.
The limiting climate features include an annual
precipitation of approximately 11 inches to 14 inches. The
average annual air temperature is 4B degrees farenheit, and
the average frost-free period is about 125 days.
83
Revised 5/87
