i•
•
.-
The vegetation of the area is sampled in order to define the
baseline conditions of the areas to be disturbed.
Preliminary surveying and sampling as well as a more
complete vegetation analysis were performed on the two areas
that are planned for disturbance Csee Map - I1: Vegetation
Map). Only preliminary surveying and sampling were completed
on the area surrounding the mine portals. The area planned
for the refuse coal disposal is located on the west side of
County Road 237. This area is about three acres in size.
The three acre parcel on the east side of 237 is the planned
location of the office, bath house, and parking area.
Two of these areas, coal refuse disposal and office area,
consist of overgrown stands of big sagebrush with understory
vegetation indicative of a highly deteriorated condition.
The areas have been disturbed by road construction, trash
and other waste dumping, vehicle traffic, previous mining,
and in general, abuse and neglect. Because of the
deteriorated condition, the Division of Mined Land
Reclamation has stipulated that for these areas a vegetation
baseline exhibit comprised only of vegetation cover
information will be adequate. Since the extant vegetation
-does not provide a decent model for post-mining
revegetation, measurement of other vegetation
characteristics, such as production and woody plant density,
would aerv• no useful purpose. Reference areas will not be
established for this vegetation type. The reclamation plan
Caee Section 2.05 - Reclamation Plan) is intended primarily
to minimize erosion, and not to re-establish vegetation as
reflected in this inventory.
Vegetation - Preliminary Survey. The preliminary vegetation
survey was performed in August 1983. Species composition,
cover, and drnsity values were obtained by using the
line-intercept method. Production values were obtained by
harvesting th• vegetation within a 9.6 square foot hoop.
The double production samples were weighed, air-dried, and
rv-weighed.
Ths steep sloping arra surrounding the mine
of a pinon-Juniper community with a sparse
pinon-Juniper overstory species composition
Juniper
Oak
Total Species Composition
77
portals consists
understory.
