• 8. Soils Resource Information
Soils data and information was taken from maps and reports
of the Soil Conservation Service (SCS). Soil distribution
for the Eastside Mine and adjacent area is shown on Figure
16s Soil Clasalfication - Eastside Mine Permit and Adjacent
Areas. The map indicates one major soil series will be
encountered during mining activities. Following is the SCS
description for the series at the sites
RL - Torriorthents - Rock outcrop complex, steep
This boadlY defined unit consists of sandstone and shale
bedrock exposures and very shallow to moderately deep sandy
soils overlying sandstone and shale bedrock and strong
basaltic alluvium. Relief is moderately steep to very
steeply eloping with slope gradients ranging from fifteen
(15) percent to seventy C70) percent.
The unit occurs intermittently throughout the soil survey
area. The Torriorthents make up about sixty <60> percent of
this unit. They are on the foothills and mountainsides with
underlying sandstone and shale bedrock exposures consisting
primarily of Mesa Verde sandstone. The soils are shallow to
moderately deep, and are generally clayey to loamy in
.~ texture with a variable amount of gravel, cobble, and stone
throughtout. The surface is stone covered due to weathering
of overlying bedrock exposures being carried down slope by
gravity.
RocK outcrop makes up twenty-five (25) percent of this unit.
The rock outcrop consists mainly of Mesa Verde sandstone.
ether series that are present in the vicinity of the mine
site arse X66F - Cushman - Lazier complex, fifteen (15>
percent to sixty-five (63) percent slopes; X76F - Dollard -
Rock outcrop shale complex, twenty-five C25) percent to
sixty-five (65) percent slope; and X21DF - Ildefonso -
Lazear complex, six (6) percent to sixty-five C65) percent
slope.
<r
~g Revised 5/87
