v
III. COMMENTS -COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations made
during the inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the inspection
and the facts or evidence supporting the enforcement action.
This was a partial inspection conducted by Jason Musick of the Colorado Division of Reclamation,
Mining, and Safety. The Southfield Mine is in permanent cessation and reclamation of most areas is
complete. Weather conditions were clear and cold at the time of the inspection. Ground conditions
were snow covered throughout the site at the time of the inspection.
Roads
The entrance gate to the mine site was locked. The access road was snow covered throughout with
no problems noted. There were no vehicle tracks through the site past pond 5. The access roads and
light-use roads throughout the site appeared stable with no problems noted at the time of the
inspection.
Hydrologic Balance
The refuse pile reclamation area collection ditches and the access road collection ditches contained
snow cover. All ditches appeared to be stable with no problems noted at the time of the inspection.
Pond 4 contained no visible water and was covered with snow. The embankments of pond 4
appeared stable with no problems noted. Pond 5 appeared to be dry with the exception of the snow
cover throughout the pond. Pond 5 embankments appeared stable with no problems noted.
Fish &Wildlife
At the time of the inspection no wildlife or cattle were actively grazing on the site. A small corral at the
road to pond 5 contained — 6 head of cattle at the time of the inspection.
Revegetation
The ground was covered throughout by recent snowfall. Although snow cover was substantial,
noticeable vegetation cover was observed throughout the reclaimed areas. The shrub transplants
appeared to be noticeable through the snow cover. No revegetation problems were noted at the time
of the inspection.
Overall, the site appeared in good condition for the winter season.
