Unfortunately, I was not able to read through it
until today, and I now see that I have missed your review deadline by almost two weeks. I
have been trying to get caught up after a vacation, and I just overlooked the fact that
you needed such a quick turn-around. I apologize for that. In case the deadline has been
extended, I have the following comments:
1. On page 3.1-3 there is reference to "Central Appalachian Mining (CAM LLC) Central
McClane Canyon Mine". The mine is the McClane Canyon Mine, which is operated by McClane
Canyon Mining LLC (MCM).
2. On page 3.1-31 there is reference to "Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology
(CDMG)". Our agency's name was recently changed to "Colorado Division of Reclamation,
Mining and Safety (CDRMS)".
3. On page 3.2-15, under the sub-section headed "Southern Section", there is confusing
discussion regarding planned coal waste disposal location. Narrative states that the
southern portion of the project area lies south of the Government Highline Canal, but goes
on to state that coal waste disposal would occur in the Southern Section of the project
area. This is not correct. The projected coal waste disposal location would be in
Garfield County, at least 6 or 7 miles to the north of the Government Highline Canal.
This subsection needs to be re-written to eliminate errors and/or confusion.
4. In the geology section, perhaps within the Coal Geology sub-section on page 3.2-11,
the burning coal seam located within the project area in the general vicinity of proposed
mining operations would seem to merit some discussion. I believe BLM (Bruce Fowler) could
provide information in this regard, or I could obtain details from our Abandoned Mine Land
program.
Again, I apologize for missing the deadline. Let me know if you have questions. If these
items were not addressed by others, perhaps appropriate updates can be incorporated in a
subsequent draft.
1
