the B coal elevation (approximately 50 feet) and at the D coal elevation (approximately 25
feet).
The area directly above the augered endwall will be a coal and overburden haul road and
dragline walkroad, so ground stability must be maintained in this area. It will be several
years before the spoil from the pit dumps completely fills in the endwall area that will be
augered. Backfilling the endwall will occur during the normal sequence of backfilling
presently occurring in the pit.
In terms of maximizing resource recovery while providing for the safety of the workers,
Auger Area #1 was a success. The success of this first auger has improved the feasibility of
future auger mining at other Colowyo pit area locations.
In 1996, Colowyo had an opportunity to implement auger mining in the West Pit, known as
Auger Area #2. The auger plan ((TR-36) was filed with the Division and subsequently
approved. Due to increased coal sales in 1996, the auger project was never conducted and
coal production was obtained by the conventional mining methods.
Refer to Section 4.23 Auger Mining for detail regarding the performance standards
applicable to auger mining.
•

2.05-38b Revision Date: 8/29/97
Revision No.: TR-42
