SECTION 7.0 Miscellaneous
7.1 Vegetation Monitoring on Trapper Reclaimed Lands
Baseline vegetation monitoring on 598 acres of reclaimed Trapper rangelands in Ashmore,
Derringer, Flintlock, East Flintlock (Z), and Hawken pits that had been initially topsoiled and seeded
between 1996 and 2005 was accomplished during the 2006 field season. A total of 162 50-meter
transects were monitored. Vegetation parameters sampled during 2006 included ground cover,
species composition and woody stem density.
Vegetation monitoring planned for 2007 will include routine sampling of -new reclaimed areas and
selected older reclaimed areas. In addition, the first of two years of vegetation sampling will occur on
300 acres of reclaimed rangelands that will be included in an application for final bond release in
2008. The rangelands to be sampled for final bond release were reclaimed from 2006 through 2008
and are located in Ashmore, Derringer and Hawken Pits.
7.2 Grazing of Reclaimed Lands
No cattle grazing occurred on Trapper reclaimed lands during 2006, nor is any planned for 2007.
7.3 2007 Revegetation Seed Mixes
Section 3.6.3.5 of Trapper's Mining and Reclamation permit requires the Division be notified of the
seed mixtures proposed to be used each year. Tables 7-1 through 7-4 give the 2007 proposed
mixtures. The Range Site A/B mixture (Table 7-1) was revised this year to put more emphasis on
less aggressive bunch grasses and to somewhat deemphasize rhizomatous wheat grass species. It is
hoped that this seed mixture change will result in better establishment of forbs and shrubs while still
maintaining a healthy and diverse presence of grass species. An experimental aerial interseeding
project is planned on approximately 60 acres of relatively recent reclaimed rangelands (Table 7-4).
Species included in the mixture are small-seeded shrub and forb species that would be expected to
be best adapted to an aerial seeding approach.
Required seed packing slips are attached behind Table 7-4 for shipments received in 2006.
7.4 Trapper Mine Facilities
In 2006, Trapper Mine facilities were not significantly changed during the reporting year. A portion of
power distribution line was relocated on the North end of Derringer Pit. The reroute was started in
late 2006 with the addition of poles and cable. In early 2007 the rerouted line was energized and a
section of existing line was removed on the North end of the pit. Also power distribution line was
extended in East Flintlock Pit for the Molly Brown dragline.
GCR 1/07
(DRMS\05VEGte#7-0]
•
