Forest Service
2777 Crossroads Blvd.
Grand Junction, CO 81506
Attn: Sally Crum
Re: GRI Project No. 2059 -Class III Cultural Resources Inventory of four proposed drill locations
for the Iron Point Exploration Plan 2001 for Bowie Resources, Ltd. in Delta County, Colorado.
Dear Ms. Crum:
On November 3, 2000 Brian O'Neil (project archaeologist), acxompanied Mike Ward of Bowie
Resources, Ltd, on an inspection tour offour proposed drill sites in the GunnisonNational Forest in Delta
County. The locations for the proposed wells are presented in the following table and on the attached
Figure 1:
Drill Site Township, Range and Section, 6'~ P.M. Quarter Sections
1P2001-1 T. 125., R 91 W., Sea 27 NW, SW, NW, SE
IP2001- 2 T. 12S., R 91 W., Sec. 27 SE, NE, NE, NW
1P2001 - 3 T. 12S., R 91 W., Sea 22 NW, NE, NE, SW
IP2001- 4 T. 12S., R 91 W., Sec. 23 ~ SE, NE, SE, SE
Though a recent snow storm had blanketed the area with 3 to 5 inches of snow, Mr. O'Neil was able to
observe the proposed locations and access routes. This area is heavily vegetated with Gambles oak,
snowberry, service berry, mountain mahogany, and bitter brush interspersed with stands of Douglas fir
and aspen. Combined with the grasses, forbs, and leaf debris, the ground cover approaches 98%. In areas
where the ground surface is visible, the surface is usually exposed bedrock with very shallow residual
soils. The terrain is steep, with slopes ranging from 40% to 90% grades. In areas with less than 35%
grade the slopes are usually formed by landslide deposits with 99% ground cover.
Based upon previous experience conducting Class III cultural resource surveys in this area for Bowie
Resources; it has been observed that the probability of encountering any cultural resources is extremely
low. Accordingly, we recommend that this project be allowed to proceed.
Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call.
Sincerely,
(~(~.
Carl E.
