Perched groundwater reservoirs appear to be limited in areal extent and storage
capacity, generally producing temporary flows of less than 5 g.p.m. when
intercepted by drilling.
Drillhole Loos. Exhibit 8, Geologic Information, contains geologic logs
developed by Glenn Miller (GEM Consulting) for EFCI (Client). Miller utilized
drilling, geophysical and core data from drill holes constructed by Dorchester
Coal Co. and EFCI (SR and SF hole numbers) for the Southfield Mine. Additional
drill hole data, from exploration programs conducted by several mining interests
preceding development of the Southfield Mine (C, CC, DH, NC, TB, and WCC
hole numbers), was compiled by Miller for EFCI and included with the geologic
logs in Exhibit 8.
These geologic logs describe the lithologic characteristics and thickness of coal
and other strata within the permit area. The locations of drill holes represented
in Exhibit 8, Geologic Information, are shown on the Mine Area Geology Map
(Map 8). This information is also graphically presented by the Geologic
Cross-Sections, (Maps 9 through 11).
Physical Properties of the Roof/Floor Material. Textural analyses were
performed for 10 of the 20 roof and floor samples selected for overburden
analyses. Commercial Testing and Engineering Co. of Denver, Colorado
completed textural analyses in accordance to USDA Handbook 60, Chapter 6
(42B)/ASTM D422-72. Generally, textural characteristics were relatively
consistent for the samples analyzed with no significant difference between roof
and floor materials. As summarized by Table 4, Textural Analysis of Roof/Floor
Materials, these materials have a relatively high percentage of sand size
particles, averaging 65% sand, 22% silt, and 13% clay. Roof/Floor materials for
the Red Arrow seam are slightly coarser with higher percentages of sand and
silt.
Chemical Analyses of the Roof/Floor Material. During 1979 and 1981, available
roof/floor samples from the Jack O'l.antern and Red Arrow coal seams were
analyzed to determine chemical characteristics of these materials. Samples
were selected from available cores penetrating the seams of interest. The
samples were analyzed for the purposes of identifying potential acid-forming,
toxic-forming or alkalinity producing materials.
2.04.6-9 Revised 10/04/07
MR-55
