West Elk Mine 2006 Annual Hydrology Report 1
1.0 INTRODUCTION
This Mountain Coal Company, LLC (MCC) West Elk Mine (Project) 2006 Annual Hydrology
Report (AHR) describes details of the hydrologic monitoring activities and summarizes pertinent
data with respect to mining operations as required by MCC's Permit C-80-007 with the Colorado
Division o Minerals and Geology (CDMG) for the Water Year 2006 (WY 2006), October 1, 2005
through September 30, 2006.
1.1 Overview of Mining Operations
In WY 2006, mining was completed in longwall pane124 and mining was advanced up to crosscut
6 in longwall panel 19 at the Project. Development mining continued in longwall panels 18, 20,
and 21 and in the SE Mains, B East Mains, E North Mains, and Box Canyon Mains (see Map 1).
2.0 HYDROLOGIC SUMMARY OF 2006 WATER YEAR
During the WY 2006, October 2005 through September 2006, precipitation ranged from 98% to
101% of total annual precipitation and snow equivalents ranged from 79% to 95% of historical
annual averages (Colorado Climate Center, 2007), resulting in slightly below average to near
average stream flows in Western Colorado (Figures 1-5).
2.1 Climatological Data
Precipitation and snow data for the Project area for WY 2006 were derived from the Paonia 1 SW
(56306), Overland Reservoir (59853), and McClure Pass (59743) meteorological and Snotel
stations. Figures 1, 2, and 3 show the WY 2006 monthly average precipitation data compared to
30-year historical averages for Paonia, Overland Reservoir, and McClure Pass (Colorado Climate
Center, 2007). The total annual precipitation was 98%, 73%, and 101%, respectively, of the 30-
year historical averages for Paonia, Overland Reservoir, and McClure Pass.

December 2007 HydroGeo, Inc.
