West Elk Mine 2006 Annual Hydrology Report 3g
300 gpm. Increased flows in this area in November 2005 were attributed to water being pumped
into the 22 tailgate sump during the Thermal Event. In addition, some small inflows, (<15 gpm)
were encountered during mine development and longwall mining. These flows and drips occurred
as roof drips, rib seeps, and minor fault zones. Total mine inflows during WY 2006 were estimated
at 320.39 ac-ft from the North Fork Gunnison raw water intake, 404.35 ac-ft from temporary
pumping of the North Fork Gunnison for the Thermal Event, 80.65 ac-ft from faults, and 25 ac-ft
from F Seam inflows for a total of 830.39 ac-ft (MCC, 2007). Inflows are illustrated on Map 1 and
the water balance is shown on Figure 8.
4.5.1 NW Panels Sealed Sump
During WY 2006, MCC water from the NW Panels Sealed Sump was drained through a borehole
to the NE Panels Sealed Sump. There was no discharge from the NW Panels Sealed Sump to the
Lone Pine Pipeline (MCC, 2007).
4.5.2 NE Panels Sealed Sump
During WY 2006, water collected in the NE Panels Sealed Sump was pumped out of the sump
using the mine water pumping facility (MWPF) up the vertical well and discharged to Sylvester
Gulch (MCC, 2007). A clarifying pond and energy dissipater system is located at this discharge
point.
4.6 Mine Water Sampling
During WY 2006 representative mine water samples were collected and analyzed at 13 locations
including the following:
• 19 headgate E3 crosscut 41 (19 HG E3 XC 41)
• 20 headgate E2 crosscut 36 roof water (20 HG E2 XC 36 Roof)
• 20 headgate E3 crosscut 36 roof water (20 HG E3 XC 36 Roof)
• 20 headgate E3 crosscut 36 floor spring (20 HG E3 XC 36 Floor Spring)
• 20 headgate crosscut 36 roof water (20 HG XC 36 Roof)
• Setup E1 crosscut (120 Setup E1 XC1)
• 22 tailgate E3 crosscut 32 (22 TG E3 XC 32)
• B south mains E3 crosscut 20 roof water (B South Mains E3 XC 20 Roof)
• 20 headgate BEM Fault (20 HG BEM Fault)
• Mine Water Discharge 004
• Mine Water Discharge 017
• Mine Water Effluent 007
• Mine Water Influent 007

A summary of the mine water quality is presented in Appendix H.
E
December 2007 HydYOGeo, Inc.
