seen in the width SSD, but those results are not presented here. This large height SSD supports the
conclusion that the woody vegetation in Exclosure 1 is in a rapid state of change. In a word, it is yet
to be decided who will occupy what space.
Cover: Cover values were determined by the proportion of the total transect area that was
occupied by the total of the projected area of the woody plants. Projected area was determined by
multiplying the square of half the mean diameter of each plant by pi. Although cover has visibly
increased compared to 2006, cover in the exclosure remains at less than 5%. Although the calculated
cover as shown in the table is about 1.5 to 2.0 percent, to be statistically fair this should be stated as
less than 5% because such low values as 1 or 2 percent are not very reliable. For now, suffice it to
say that although the numbers of plants in the exclosure is excellent, they really don't contribute
much to the overall cover of the vegetation. Herbaceous species account for nearly all the cover at
this time.
TABLE 1: Exclosure Analysis Results for 2007 - Exclosure 1 (most southerly)
parameter Transect 1
(most
northerly) Transect 2
(middle) Transect 3 (most
southerly) All Transec[s All Woody
Plants
ttl transect ingth 145 feet 142 feet 139 feet 426 feet 426 feet
veg transect ingth 114 feet 133 feet 82.5 feet 329.5 feet 329.5 feet
transect width 6 feet 6 feet 6 feet 6 feet 6 feet
ttl transect area 870 sq ft 852 sq ft 834 sq ft 2556 sq ft 2556 sq ft
veg transect area 684 sq ft 798 sq ft 495 sq ft 1977 sq ft 1977 sq ft
Papu[us Populus + Salix
number 54 23 10 87 282
mean height (in.) 14.93 30.3 36.1 21.425 26.855
max height (in.) 46 65 54 65 65
min height (in.) 8 10 20 8 8
height SSD**
(inches) 8.661 12.279 11.618 13.099 11.304
cover 1.274 1.694 2.128 1.657 8.04
density 1*
(plants/acre) 2704 1176 522 1483 4806
density 2*
(plants/acre) 3439 1255 880 1917 6213
2007 Annual Report Coal Creek Wetland Mitigation Permit DA 198811488 Page 9
