The majority of sedimentary rocks observed in the area
belong to either the Minturn or Maroon Formations . Only small
isolated patches of the other Paleozoic units have been found in
the area. Stratigraphic continuity is limited by movement along
the numerous faults. Many of the sedimentary rocks have under-
gone some metamorphic alterations.
Tertiary Intrusive Rocks
Intrusive rocks of tertiary age occur as dikes, sills
and stocks. They are generally quartz monzonites in composition.
Major outcropping stocks are the Humbug, Tucker Mountain, Chalk
Mountain and English Gulch stocks. Numerous sills and dikes of
quartz monzonite, correlated with either Elk Mountain or Lincoln
• Porphyry occur in the area.
Quaternary Deposits
Quaternary deposits are detrital in nature and contain
sand, gravel and boulders. They originated from glacial, recent
alluvial or landslide activity. These are, for the most part,
confined to valley bottoms.
Structural Geology
A large amount of faulting and folding has occurred in
the area. The two major structural features are the Mosquito
Fault and Kokomo Syncline.
The Mosquito Fault is traceable for many miles. Major
movement along this fault probably occurred between 26 and 10
4-3
