At that time the tailings zones A and B, which have been considered
to be reclaimed, were not inspected. Due to this being a minor follow-up inspection, only for observing conditions on the
tailings zones C and D, the operator was not contacted about the inspection. There was no activity and no operator personnel
present during the inspection. There was a new snow cover of about 4-6 inches.
The top surface of the tailings is steadily becoming more revegetated. Apparent even under the snow cover are the thousands
of young narrowleaf cottonwood trees and willow shrubs which are scattered well throughout the surface. Most of them are 2
feet tall, and are becoming dominant among the other species (mainly grasses) that were seeded there. The straw bales
appear to have been effective at catching sediment and promoting revegetation since the grasses are most robust near the
bales. Though the bales are breaking down, the established vegetation is helping to reduce sediment and runoff, and the
operator is not required to replace the bales. There are young volunteer spruces encroaching from the surrounding
undisturbed land, and appear to be more numerous than in previous years. Many are a foot tall or more.
The sloped faces of the tailings were inspected for stability and erosion. The slopes did not have any snow on them, and
exhibit very little erosional features in most places. No runoff reports to the slopes from the top surface of the tailings, due to
the bermed margin and slightly dished top surface. Most of the slopes are sandy, and do not exhibit erosion. Some of the
slopes are armored for better erosion protection. The slopes appear to be consistent with the approved reclamation plan.
The county may now be responsible for noxious weed control along the roadway. No new weed areas were observed. But the
county and the operator should continue to coordinate the regular monitoring and treat as needed.
This office will inspect the site in 2008 to verify the adequacy of the grading and drainage, and check for settling, vegetation and
weeds.
No further items were observed during the inspection. Responses to this inspection report should be directed to the Division of
Reclamation, Mining and Safety, 701 Camino del Rio, Room 315, Durango, Colorado 81301, Attn: Bob Oswald; phone no. 970-
247-5193.
