•
PROJECT OBJECTIVES AND METHODOLOGY
The inventory was carried out to locate, record and evaluate any cultural resources within
the parcels proposed for underground mining activities. Sites are defined as a discreet locus of
patterned activity that is presumed to be interpretable, as opposed to isolated finds which
consist of one or a very few artifacts in a location which is judged as not representing patterned
behavior.
The survey areas were delineated on topographic maps by National King Coal and the
boundaries were indicated on the ground by Tom Bird. The inventory was carried out by two
persons walking parallel zig-zag transects approximately 15 meters apart. When cultural
resources were located they were photographed, sketch mapped, and detailed notes were taken
of the surrounding environment. Smithsonian numbers were assigned and Colorado
Historical Society forms were completed. Field notes are on file at CASA offices in Cortez,
Colorado. No artifacts were collected during the project.
PROJECT RESULTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
~vo Isolated Finds were recorded. Both consisted of prehistoric lithics and were located
on points overlooking drainages. Neither of the IFs is considered to be significant or eligible
for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places.
5LP2738 (IFl
• This isolated find of unknown prehistoric affiliation and age was located on the southeast
edge of the mesa, overlooking Pine Gulch. Vegetation is pinyon juniper woodland in shallow
soil over sandstone bedrock. The find consisted of a utilized flake of banded chalcedony
measuring 5x2.5x1.5 cm and a possible core chopper of quartzite measuring 7x5.5x3.5 cm.
These two artifacts were approximately ten meters apart and no other cultural materials or
deposits were associated with them.
5LP2739 (IF)
This isolated find consists of a projectile point (Figure 4) and two unutilized flakes on the
point of a ridge overlooking Pine Gulch. Vegetation on the south-facing slope is large pinyon
and juniper. Soil is shallow over sandstone bedrock. The side-notched projectile point is of
tan siltstone and has a convex base. Measurements are 3.25 cm long, 1.5 cm at the widest point,
and 0.4 cm thick. Similar projectile points have been placed in the statistical S-5 type and the
intuitive T32 and T33 types for the Dolores Archaeological Project (Phagan 1988). Similar
projectile points were also recorded during the Mancos and La Plata River Basins Class II
survey at sites 5LP3643, 5LP3653, and 5LP3659 (Chenault,1996). Unfortunately, none of these
occurrences can be definitely assigned culturally or temporally. The secondary unutilized
flakes were within a ten meter radius of the projectile point and were of black chalcedony and
white quartzite.
SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS
Results of this survey were similar to expectations. Cultural resources were limited to
isolated occurrences on the ends of ridges.
•
5
July 199.7
