• PROJECT DESCRIP IZON
Name: Section 31 Parcel
Legal Location: portions of the N'/z SWl/, and SE'/, NW'/a Section 31 Township 35 North, Range 11
West, NMPM, La Plata County, Colorado (Figure 2).
Map Reference: Kline, Colorado 7.5 minute USGS, 1968
Hesperus, Colorado 7.5 minute USGS, 1963
Operator: National King Coal
Area Surveyed: Approximately 60 acres
Ownership: Ute Mountain Ute Tribe
Elevation: 7560-7660 feet
Description: The survey parcel consists of a relatively level mesa top and the upper slopes of the
canyon overlooking Hay Gulch to north. The project area is bounded to west, east,
and south by fence lines. The majority of the survey parcel is on the mesa top which
has been chained. Originally apinyon-juniper woodland, regrowth is mainly
sagebrush with scattered clumps of oak brush (Figure 3). Piles of dead wood are
scattered over the mesa top. Only two large pinyons, remnants of the original
• growth, remain. A porcupine is happily munching away in the top of one of these
(Figure 4). There is very little evidence of recent use, a few cartridges and a single
40 gallon drum, formerly containing some indecipherable pesticide. A track road
drops off the mesa top into Hay Gulch does not appear to be driveable. The ground
has been disturbed by the chaining with tabular yellow sandstone scattered over the
` surface as a result. The northern slopes of the mesa are covered with a thick growth
of oakbrush and pinyon. Juniper, while present, is scarce. There will be no surface
disturbance as all mining activity will take place 300 feet below the surface.
.~:.
Cultural Resources: None
Recommendations: Cultural resource clearance is recommended for survey parcel at the location
described in this report.
•
7
June 1995
