• Abstract
This report describes the Class III cultural resource inventory on a parcel of Ute Mountain Ute Lands
in the Hay Gulch Area, southwest of Hesperus, La Plata County, Colorado. The land parcel surveyed overlies
a proposed underground coal mining operation. The field work was done on December 2, 1994 by Laurens
C. Hammack, Complete Archaeological Service Associates (CASA) at the request of Thomas Bird, National
King Coal. The inventory was accomplished under the provisions of Bureau of Indian Affairs Permit CRSA
92-14 and Ute Mountain Ute Operating Permit 95-157 issued to CASA.
Approx;mately 60 acres was inventoried on the top and upper slopes of a mesa south and
overlooking Hay Gulch on Ute Mountain Ute Lands. There will be no surface disturbance as all activity will
be confined to underground coal mining operations, a minimum of 300 feet below ground surface. No cultural
resources were recorded within the area surveyed. Cultural resource clearance is recommended for the survey
parcel at the location described in this report.
•
C,
1 Ji.me 1995 \
