2.04.9 -SOIL RESOURCE INFORMATION
SOILS
10.88 acres make up the disturbed portion of the King I Mine permit area,
which was developed prior to 1941). All topsoil to be used for reclamation purposes
will be removed from a Topsoil Borrow Area (1.5 acres) and two subsoil storage areas
as shown on Map King I-007. The Topsoil Borrow Area is the property of Huntington
Ranches, LLC and agreements are in place for the post-mining use of this topsoil
(See Appendix 12). Designs for sediment control around the topsoil borrow area will
be submitted prior to any disturbance in that area.
The land surrounding the 10.88 disturbed acres has remained untouched with
the original soils intact. Soils of these areas have been surveyed and delineated into
two soil mapping units.
The Soil Conservation Service has mapped and recorded site-specific data on
the physical and chemical properties of these soils. (See Appendix 12(3)). The soil
types are shown on Map King I-006.
SOIL MAPPING UNITS DESCRIPTIONS
42-Lazear-Rock outcrop complex, 12 to 65 percent slopes.
This soil complex encompasses the majority of the disturbed portion of the
King I Mine surface facilities. The haul road crossing the alluvial valley floor is the
only exception (See below: 13-Big Blue Clay Loam).
Please refer to Appendix 6(1) for a complete survey of this soil complex
provided by the Soil Conservation Service.
13- Big Blue Clap Loam, O to 6 percent slopes
This soil encompasses the portion of disturbed area which is crossed by the
haul road. The haul road will not be reclaimed upon completion of mining.
Please refer to Appendix 6(1) for a complete survey of this soil complex
provided by the Soil Conservation Service.
RECLAMATION TOP SOIL
Based on the data provided by the Soil Conservation Service in their mapping
unit descriptions and soil survey interpretations (Table 1), the determination of
suitability was made for each mapping unit. The source of criteria for evaluating
topsoil suitability was Soil Conservation Service guidelines (National Soils Handbook
1978) and Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality (WDEQ) guidelines
(WDEQ Guideline No. 3, 1976).
For the 10.88 acres of the permit area which has previously been disturbed by
mining activities, the necessary quantity and quality of cut material (soil and
overburden) for reclamation is available in stockpiles in the upper reaches of the
National King Coal, LLC King I Mine
Section 2.04.9
Page 1 February, 2007
