2.04.8 -CLIMATOLOGICAL INFORMATION
<br />Site-specific data on the climate at the mine site are not available. However,
<br />precipitation data has been recorded for the Fort Lewis Station. Temperature
<br />information and freeze data are also available for Fort Lewis. The mine site is
<br />located approximately 3.8 miles west of the recording station.
<br />Although the rugged topography in La Plata County causes large variations in
<br />climate within short distances, the climatic data recorded for Fort Lewis should be
<br />very close to that at the proposed mine site. Elevation at the proposed mine site is
<br />approximately 7,500 feet above sea level. The weather station at Fort Lewis is
<br />situated at an elevation of 7,610 feet above sea level.
<br />The normal precipitation and normal temperatures, taken from
<br />"Climatography of the United States No. 81-4, Decennial Census of U.S. climate," for
<br />Fort Lewis are given in Appendix 5. The 10-year, 24 hour precipitation event for the
<br />area is 2.2 inches. The 25-year, 24 hour event is 2.6 inches. The 100-year, 24 hour
<br />event is 3.2 inches. These figures were taken from Volume III of the "Precipitation -
<br />Frequency Atlas of the Western United States", a 1973 NOAA publication.
