ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT <br />CO-038-96-30 <br />NATIONAL KING COAL, INC. <br />COAL LEASE MODIFICATION <br />C-29125 & COC 49465 <br />I. PURPOSE AND NEED <br />The Colorado State Director of the Bureau of Land Management <br />has received a lease modification application from National <br />King Coal, Inc., dated September 5, 1995. The application <br />involves modification of lease C-29125 in the amount of 100 <br />acres and COC 49465 in the amount of 160 acres. The <br />application was submitted under the Mineral Leasing Act of <br />1920, Federal Coal Leasing Amendments Act of 1976, and 43 CFR <br />3432.1. The coal reserves are managed by the Montrose <br />District Office of the BLM. The applicant has need for the <br />coal in order to maintain an existing operation at its current <br />level of production. The purpose of the environmental <br />assessment (EA) is to evaluate potential impacts of the <br />modification upon the physical and socioeconomic environment <br />and to develop mitigating measures to be included as lease <br />stipulations in the event the lease modification is issued. <br />• The application area, adjacent to existing coal lease C-29125 <br />4 leased to National King Coal, Inc., is described as follows: <br />C-29125 <br />T. 34 N., R. 11 W., N.M.P.M., North of Ute Line <br />Section 5: Sl/~SWI/+NW/a, El/zWl/ZSWl/a <br />Section 6: E1hE1hNE'/a <br />Containing approximately 100 acres <br />COC 49465 <br />T. 34 N., R. 11 W., N.M.P.M., North of Ute Line <br />Section 5: Wl/aTnT~hSWl/a <br />Section 6: Wl/~E1hNE1/a, E1hSE1/a <br />Containing approximately 160 acres <br />The application area is located in LaPlata County, Colorado <br />(see maps 1 and 2). The surface is privately owned and the <br />coal rights are reserved to the United States. Oil and gas <br />lease C-41643, issued October 30, 1985, is indicated as being <br />partly located within the modification area (El/~TEI/a) (see map <br />3).
