The following information pertaining to Wildlife is .provided— use by
the Land Reclamation Board in their consideration of a mining permit
• for National Kino Coal, Inc
(King -Coal Mine)
The Colorado Division of Wildlife does hereby find, to the best of our
knowledge, that the impact of the proposed mining operation on wildlife
will be
minor
X moderate: - -.
major .
Mine Location:
T35N, R11W, Section 31, SE4j NE4, W11 NW; and Section 32, W15, NW;, SE:, NWz
Wildlife Species List: Cmay be attached)
Deer, elk, coyote, bobcat, doves, band-tailed pigeons, mountain lion, cottontail
rabbits, raptors (including golden and bald eagles) and many forms of non-game
birds and mammals inhabit this area.
Endangered Species Impacted:
Northern bald eagles inhabit the general area during winter months.
Assessment of Impact on Wildlife:
The major impacts on wildlife will be from the combined activities of -several mines
• in the area. Because of the long history of mining in the area, many of the impacts
to wildlife have already occurred. The increased minina activity will be the pri-
mary impact on wildlife. Additional truck traffic and human activity will impact
big game, primarily during winter months. This area is critical deer winter range.
Any new construction activity in the south, southwest facing slopes will impact the
most important deer winter range.
Mine Reclamation Recommendations: (may be attached)
We concur with the reclamation plan as outlined in the questionnaire. It is very
important for a company representative to maintain contact with the Division
of Wildlife Manager to discuss potential wildlife problems and solutions for al-
leviating these problems. Close coordination at the local -level will prevent .
many mining-wildlife associated problems.
Revegetation should include establishment of the following plant species to enhance
mule dee,- range: sagebrush, rabbitbrush, smooth brome grass, ladak alfalfa and
yellow sweetclover. We would also recommend that activities on the south, southwest
slopes be restricted each year from December 15 through May. 15, during the high
deer use period.
Prepared by Art Gresh Title DWM
Date 2-28-80
10
November 1993
