The company also operates the Henderson molybdenum mine in Clear Creek County, the only other molybdenum
operation in Colorado.
Though it has been closed, the Climax mine's permits remain active, said Allen Sorenson, reclamation specialist with
the Colorado Division of Reclamation of Mining and Safety.
The owners will need a modification to their permits, which will require a public hearing, Sorenson said. No date has
been set.
In Leadville, there has been little outcry about the prospect of a reopened mine. Though it will mean more trucks on
area roads, there will be no impact on outdoor recreation, Sorenson said.
Ski Cooper, the ski area near the mine, isn't concerned about it. In fact, said resort spokesman Bob Casey, more mine
employees in the area will mean more skiers.
Lake County is home to some of Colorado's most-visited fourteeners, Mount Massive and Mount Elbert, as well as the
popular camping, boating and fishing destination Twin Lakes. Scanlon doesn't expect the mine reopening to change the
character of the area.
Leadville's major industry since the Climax mine closed has been tourism, Scanlon said, adding, "I don't believe we will
stray away from tourism."
CONTACT THE WRITER: 476-1605 or scott.rappold@gazette.com
BACKGROUND
The Climax mine opened in 1918 and was gradually closed down from 1983 to 1995 because of a collapse in the price
of molybdenum, which is used to strengthen steel.
