Schwartzwalder ~9ine -Hydrologic Evaluation of h1ine Closure and Reclamation ~g
Atter 1953, mining and dewatering operations altered the groundwater tlow regime and created a zone of
depression in the potentio-netric surface around the mine. Groundwater within the -none of depression was
captured by the mine and pumped to the surface where it was treated and discharged to Ralston Creek. The
capture zone around the mine was limited in aerial extent (both vertically and horizontally) because of the
relatively low permeability of the surrounding rock mass. A diagram of the groundwater tlow system tlow
system during mining is shown in Figure 16.
SW
~ooo
esoo
soon
ssoo
x000
~soo
X000
Figure 16. Groundwater levels and water in the mine pool have risen until they are near the
equilibrium static water level. At the steady state level, the post mining groundwater Clow system will he
similar to the pre-mining system, with very little Clow in the low-permeabilit}' bedrock. l'he mine voids,
however, will provide a permanent hydraulic connection throughout the rock ma_tis in the mine area (Figure
17).
d 109R.o71 1 16 Whetstone Associates ~
- ~ -- ~
r
r ~
~ N
O O
Z Z
~ ~ NE
m
m m
x ~
