Construction Report -Section 28 Pond
Construction Report
Section 28 Pond
As required by Rule 4.05.9 (14), the following report is provided to document
construction information upon completion of construction.
The impoundment was constructed by Anson Excavating during August through
November, 2007. Design information for the pond is presented in Volume 13, Exhibit 7,
Item 20, Part A of the Colowyo Mine permit.
A preconstruction meeting was held with Mike Anson, Dusty Wiseman, Juan Garcia,
Alan Jorgensen, Tay Tonozzi, and Tom Peterson on July 12, 2007. Following is the
proposed list of equipment to be used for construction:
• Cat 433 Sheepsfoot
Cat 325 Backhoe
• Cat D7 or D8 Dozer
• 650 Water truck (as needed)
• two Komatsu 350 articulated dump trucks
Topsoil removal from the pond footprint was salvaged in a new stockpile constructed
below the toe of the embankment. All topsoil from the impoundment footprint was
removed from the impoundment interior as of August 8, 2007. An estimated 1,059
cubic yards were stockpiled based on the final field survey.
Survey control was provided by Jerry Magas of Colowyo Mine. The following control
points were established, and the contractor then used this information to provide their
own survey information during construction.
Name Northing Easting Elevation
S28B 327202.41 1347405.18 7371.95
S28C 326699.85 1346978.06 7198.54
S28D 326150.87 1347092.88 7048.31
S28E 325801.39 1347130.34 7026.28
Six separate borrow samples were obtained and sent to NWCC Laboratories for testing.
Atterberg Limits, Proctor tests, and gradational analyses were obtained for all four
samples. The samples were designated as samples P5 through P10. Samples P5 and
P6 were obtained from the interior of Prospect Pond, as it was determined that
materials removed during cleanout operations at this impoundment might be used for
some of the Section 28 embankment fill. In practice, timing of these two separate
activities did not coincide and thus these results can be ignored.
Proctor Samples P7 and P8 were obtained from the interior of the Section 28 Pond, and
all available excavation from the interior was eventually placed within the embankment.
Page 1
