1
t
' Darrel L. Buffington, P.E. Heap Leach Design ICont'd1
Water Retention and Tailings Dams
' McCoy Projsct, Lander County, Nevada. Geotechnical and hydrologic investigations and design of
three 1.04 million square foot peomembrane lined heap leach pads, a 3 million gallon process solution
' containment pond and a 2.5 million gallon stormwater retention pond. Project included evaluation of
potentially hydrocollapsing soils on liner system. Construction consultation was provided as part of
construction management services.
Rawhide Project, Mineral County, Nevada. Geotechnical and hydrologic investigation and design
development studies were conducted fora 13.4 million square foot leach pad to be used in processing
about 30 million tons of ore over a 15 year mine life. Project technical issues included developing
' procedures to construct the leach pad aver a foundation which varied from bedrock to up to 15 feet
of coarse rockfill. Open pits and shafts occurring within the pad area required closure in such a manner
as to minimize future subsidence.
' East Robinson Project, White Pine County, Nevada. A review evaluation was made on the behalf of
amine property owner of a gold heap leaching operation proposed by the mine operator. The purpose
' of the review was to assess the environmental liability exposure of the property owner associated with
the operation and to develop cost estimates to remediate potential operational occurrences which
would result in contaminant release.
' Brewer Gold Facility, Jefferson, South Carolina. Design was completed of a 600,000 square foot
reusable asphalt lined heap leach pad and associated solution and storm channels to route flows from
the pad to process facilities and solution ponds which were designed by others. The project also
' included review of construction quality assurance testing.
Water Retention and Tailings Dams:
' Mr. Buffington has gained broad based experience in the evaluation and design of water and mine
waste retention dams. Specific technical areas include:
' Site characterization with evaluation of strength, deformation and hydraulic properties
of foundation materials.
' Settlement analysis of dams with evaluation of outlet works joint extension
requirements.
Slope stability analysis under static and dynamic conditions, with permanent
' deformation analysis.
Seepage analysis and pore pressure prediction.
' Design of internal drainage provisions and filter zones for control of seepage forces.
1
J
