FIGGS
Ecologist Planner, Community Organizer
Landscape, Resource, and Ecosystem Planning, Inc.
Professional Interest
Since 1980 I have developed, from an avocation in natural and cultural history, a
professional career in promoting and implementing land and resource planning and
management that is consistent with sustainable environmental and ecological practices. I
have implemented this interest in both the public and private sectors, and believe that
community education and organization is the key to the successful attainment of this
interest.
Qualifications
biy natural resource management skills were developed during an eleven year period
through association and training with professional ecologists, biologists, geologists, and
land use planners. These skills include identification of significant natural and historical
features, development of preservation and management plans for significant natural and
historical features, analysis of impacts of land use and development proposals, and defense
of significant natural and historical features from degrading land use and development
proposals. These skills have been applied in descending order of emphasis in: Boulder
County, Colorado; Northern Front Range in Colorado, State of Colorado, Western United
States. Natural features and ecosystems I have worked with include native prairies and
grasslands, old growth forests, endangered species, birds of prey, and wetlands.
Community organization skills include founding and management of non-prott
' corporations, founding and management of for-profit corporation, appointments to citizen
advisory committees at the municipal, county, and congressional levels, and grass roots
community organization. Through community organization efforts I have developed
' proven shills in written and oral communication including public speaking, consensus
building, and organizational leadership and management, typically in relation to the
resolution of controversial issues.
1

1
1
1
1
Experience and Education
I have participated in the identification and protection of thousands of acres of ecologically
significant land, including the 320 acre Sheep Mountain Ranch in Boulder County
Colorado, and the 4,156 acre Piedra Valley Ranch in Archuleta County, Colorado, both
properties being subsequently purchased by The Nature Conservancy. I organized citizen
support for the open space purchases of the 308 acre Lagerman Reservoir parcel and the
1,200 acre Rabbit Mountain parcel by the Boulder County Commissioners. During my
tenure on the City of Boulder Open Space Board of Trustees I participated in the
identification, acquisition, and development of management plans for more than 18,000
acres of open space.
Through my work with with private land trusts, I have developed viable alternatives to the
public acquisition of private lands that have significant natural and cultural history
resources m the State of Colorado.
1
