October 16, 2007
Deb E. Gonima
Environmental Protection Specialist
Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety
Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, CO 80203
RECEIVED
ocr 2 2 200
Division of Reclamation,
Mining and Safety
~,~-~
Re: Centennial State Paving, Inc., Pheasant Run Gravel Pit (File No. M-2007-069) (CHS #51088)
Dear Ms. Gonima:
Thank you for your correspondence dated October 11, 2007 (received by out office on October 12)
regarding the project referenced above.
A search of the Colorado Cultural Resource Inventory indicated that while no surveys for cultural
resources have been conducted in the proposed pemut area, two resources have previously been
recorded in Section 32. Site 5PE652 (the Rocky Ford Highline Canal) was determined not eligible for
the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) on December 4, 2006, while site 5PE5387 (the
Oxford Ditch) was determined eligible for the NRHP on the same date. Our files contain incomplete
information for this area, as most of Colorado has not yet been inventoried for cultural resources. As a
result, there is the possibility that as yet unidentified cultural resources exist within the permit area. It is
our opinion that the proposed pit will have no effect on 5PE5387 since it is located outside the
proposed permit area.
Should human remains be discovered doting reclamation activities, the requirements under State law
CRS 24-80 part 13 apply and must be followed.
Thank you for the opportunity to comment. If we may be of further assistance, please contact Greg
Wolff, Section 106 Compliance Coordinator, at (303) 866-4674.
Sincerely,
~~
Georgianna Contiguglia
State Historic Preservation Officer
GC/GAW
1300 BROADWAY DENVER COLORADO 80203 TEL 303/866-3395 Fax 303/866-2711 wwwcoloradohistory-oahp.org
€c~ OFFICE o~ ARCHAEOLOGY and HISTORIC PRESERVATION
