• 7990 ANNUAL RECLAMATION REPORT
Existing Disturbance
A temporary cessation plan for Nucla Mine was submitted to the Division on December 14,
1989 and approved on April 5, 1990. No additional disturbance occurred during this report
period.
Backfilling and Grading
No backfilling or final grading activities were completed during this report period.
Soil and Sooil Monitoring Data
Peabody Coal Company is required by Permit C-81-008 to monitor replaced soil and final
graded spoil at Nucla Mine and submit the information to the Division by April 75 of each
year. Monitoring programs include verifying soil replacement depths, determining final
graded spoil quality, determining soil fertility, and completing an annual soil balance.
Peabody is submitting this information with the Annual Reclamation Report as recommended
by Section 2.04.13(2) of Colorado's Regulations for Coal Mining. The following soil and
• spoil quality information is presented for the 1990 field season.
Sooil quality. Peabody did not complete any final grading or sampling of spoil during
1990. Final grading and spoil sampling of the Pit 2 reclamation area was completed during
1989.
Extremely acid spoil was identified at tuo sample sites in the Pit 2 reclamation area as
described in the Annual Topsoil Balance and Spoil quality Report for the 1989 field season
(DCC, 1990). The etid spoil area is shown on the enclosed Exhibit 1.
Acid spoil must be covered or neutralized prior to redistributing soil as described in Tab
21, page 21-5 of the permit. Numerous lime producing companies (a cement plant, quarry,
sugar beet factory, and pouerplant) were contacted to locate an economical and effective
neutralizing produce. A oast a-lime product consisting of processed sugar beet pulp and
pulverized limestone, was located at the former sugar bee[ factory in Delta. According to
Jim Herron, Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Division, this product has a calcium carbonate
content of about 80 to 90 percent (pers.comm „ 12-7-89).
•
1
