~ SURFACE WATER MONTTORING
Two primazy locations on Foidel Creek in the vicinity of the mine portal aze monitored.
Station 800 is upstream of the portal and flow is monitored by the USGS (Station
09243800). Water quality is monitored by Cyprus. Station 8 is a short distance
downstream of the portal. Four primary locations on Fish Creek are monitored. Station
16 is located upstream of Mine No. 2. This station replaces Site 1001, which was
located upstream of the point where Fish Creek enters Twentymile Pazk. Site 1002 is
located on Fish Creek about mid-way through its reach in Twentymile Pazk and
downstream of the Fish Creek Borehole. Site 27A is located immediately upstream of
the Fish Creek Tipple. Site 1003 is located in the north end of Twentymile Park
upstream of the confluence with Trout Creek and approximately '/z-1 mile downstream
of the tipple. Two sites on Trout Creek are monitored, with a third site being added for
reporting in the 1994 AHR. Site 301 is located upstream of the confluence of Middle
Creek with Trout Creek and Site 69 is located downstream of the confluence. Site 1005
has been installed below the confluence of Trout and Fish Creeks. In addition, three sites
to measure stream stage only were established in 1988; Site 307 on Fish Creek adjacent
to We11006-AZ-3, Site 305 on Fish Creek adjacent to We11008-AU-3, and Site 304 on
Foidel Creek adjacent to Well 008-AV-2. An additional surface site was installed in
early 1994 below the confluence of Trout and Fish creeks (Site 1005), and will be
reported beginning with the 1994 AHR. Fish Creek AVF mine area sites are in
Appendix B.
Flows
The streams aze gauged at all six primary locations on Foidel and Fish Creeks.
Typically, due to the size of the streams at the measurement locations, they must be rated
instead of using a more accurate controlled section such, as a flume. During extremely
low flows a cutthroat flume is occasionally used to rate the stream. The flow data for
the two streams aze summarized on Table 30. Plots of the historic flow measurements
on Foidel Creek are presented on Figures 24 through 27. The data shows the typical
seasonal variation with a rapid rise and fall of flow rates during spring runoff. 1993 was
a below normal to normal runoff year in Foidel Creek. In other drainages in the azea it
was a below normal yeaz. At Foidel Creek Station 8 the flow is maintained essentially
year-round by the discharge from the underground mine and dischazges related to the
surface mines. The other Foidel Creek stations show limited flow during the 1993
irrigation season.
The data from the stations on Fish Creek show the typical seasonal variation. Due to the
~ runoff in 1993, the minimum flows are higher than those of 1992. The flow data for
Fish Creek aze presented on Figures 28 through 30 and 41. Minimal increase in flow aze
indicated by the Borehole data. No impact from the activities at the Tipple are indicated
by the data. Minimal impacts aze expected from Fish Creek Borehole flows in terms of
-7- 6/10/94 1:23 pm
\•
