III. SURFACE WATER
• A. Operational Monitoring Program
The operational surface water monitoring program as approved in the
Nucla Mine Permit is detailed in Appendix A, (Attachment A)
Reduction of Monitoring for the Nucla Strip. The location of each
of these sites and pertinent site information are presented on
Exhibit 1 and Table 2, respectively. Included on this map and
table are those sites which have been established subsequent to
-
---
~
-
implementation of the monitoring program outlined in Appendix A.
Specifically, Spoils Springs {il and l12 located immediately to the
west of the inlet to the 001 sedimentation pond have been monitored
since the fall of 1984 and 1986, respectively, for the same
parameters and at the same frequency as the Highwall Spring
described in Appendix A; and surface water monitor-ing-si-te -SW-N7
located upstream of the "triangle area" has been monitored since
March of 1986 for the same parameters and at the same frequency as
the other surface water sites. In addition to this monitoring, a
semiannual spoils spring survey of reclaimed areas has been
• initiated as of this fall (September,1986). It was during this
survey that Spoils Spring N2 was discovered (see Section III.C.S).
This survey also includes those areas to be mined in the scraper
area. Also included on Exhibit 1 are those surface water sites
which have been established for the purpose of collecting baseline
hydrology information for the Nucla East Mine area; these sites
will not be discussed in this AHR. However, Nucla East data which
have been collected through September 1986 and have been input to
the PCC computerized water resources data base are reported in
Appendix B.
An additional surface water monitoring site is being considered_ for
the Nucla Mine in the post-law reclaimed area above County Road
124A-A. Because regrading and seeding in this area will not be
completed until the fall of 1988, the monitor instrumentation and
location specifics will be deferred until then. Oata obtained from
• this site will serve to evaluate the success of reclamation
practices with regard to controlling drainage and chemical na d
sediment loads from post-law reclaimed area.
5
