1.0 INTRODUCTION
This report summarizes the results from the fifth and final third-party monitoring trip to
Battle Mountain Resources, Inc.'s (BMRI) San Luis Gold Project in Costilla County,
Colorado, which took place on October 12 and 13, 1993. The report contains information
on: summary and assessment of sampling activities; summary and assessment of analytical
activities, and recommendations for future sampling. The following documentation and data
are included as appendices in this report: Sampling Observation Documentation, consisting
of copies of field notes (Appendix A); Chain-of-Custody Documentation (Appendix B);
Analytical Results, consisting of verbatim analytical results from Core Laboratories
(Appendix C); Laboratory Quality Control Report (Appendix D); Letter from Core
Laboratories regarding reanalyses, exceedence of holding times, and violation of acceptance
criteria dated November 15, 1993 (Appendix E); and Letter from Core Laboratories
regarding dilution of collection impoundment and lower tailings impoundment samples for
high color (Appendix F).
2.0 SUMMARY AND ASSESSMENT OF SAMPLING ACTIVITIES
One surface water location, three process points and three groundwater welds were sampled
during the October 12-13, 1993 sampling trip. The sampling locations were: RS-5 in the
Rito Seco Creek; the lower tailings impoundment; the upper tailings impoundment, the
collection impoundment, well M-9M-9, well M-12 and well M-13. Three field quality control
(QC) samples were taken: one field blank, one rinse blank (taken before collection of the
sample from groundwater well M-13), and one duplicate sample taken at groundwater well
M-13. A summary of the types of samples collected at each location and the analyzes
determined is provided in Table 1. An assessment of the sampling activities is provided
below.
The weather on October 12 was sunny and windy with temperatures near 6(WF; the weather
on October 13 was also sunny, with temperatures near 50°F in the morning. The water level
in Rito Seco Creek was low, with silt bars and some gravel in the stream bed. The beaver
dam upstream of RS-5 was breached during spring runoff, which likely accounted for the
presence of the silt bars in the stream. During the October l2-]3, ]993 sampling trip tailings
were being deposited into the lower impoundment, and recycle water was being pumped
from the upper impoundment. The second stage of the tailings impoundment (second lift,
final height) was being completed, which will result in one large impoundment with no
splitter dam. The tailings impoundment underdrains are reportedly producung `50-60 gpm
now as opposed to over 200 gpm in the past.
As on previous trips, all samples for cyanide determinations were stored in zip-lock bags
before putting in coolers to avoid potential cross-contamination of samples. All process
point samples were placed in one cooler; RS-5, blanks, and the groundwater samples were
