We believe that the technical revision process is appropriate to
address the necessary permitting, because the situation has the potential to significantly impact
the reclamation plan for the West Elk Mine. In addition, it is appropriate to provide adequate
public notice regazding the ongoing mitigation efforts. The information provided with the
technical revision should document the slide as defined to date, all mitigation methods employed
thus far, and planned for the future. Please also address any potential, or actual changes to the
approved reclamation plan for the site, and any associated changes to the existing reclamation
bond amount.
We understand that the plans may still be evolving, and that you will need some time to develop
the application package. Please attempt to submit the technical revision by June I, 1998. Your
cooperation and efforts are appreciated. Please feel free to call with any questions.
Sincerely,
l ~.
~' ~~..
vid erry
-~
Senior Environmental Protection Specialist
c: McCannon
Pendelton /
Boulay V/
