The following analytical determinations were performed on all samples collected for this trip:
total cyanide, WAD cyanide, calcium, copper, iron, sodium and zinc. Nitrate + nitrite was
not determined on samples from this trip. The unfltered-filtered comparisons were agreed
to be conducted for only two sampling trips (the second and third third-party monitoring
visits). Therefore, only unfiltered samples were collected at all locations. Consequently,
neither the barrel filter nor the in-line filter assemblies were used for filtration of
groundwater samples.
2.1 FIELD MEASUREMENTS
The dissolved oxygen and pI-I/conductivity/temperature meters were calibrated each morning
using pH 7 and 10 buffers, 1433 µS/cm conductivity standard and an air calibration for the
dissolved oxygen meter. All meters operated satisfactorily during this trip.
2.2 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL SAMPLES
The rinse blank (taken before collection of groundwater well M-13) was iprepared by
washing the green plastic bucket and the 600-m1 plastic beaker with soapy water, followed
by a tap water rinse and finally by a DI rinse. The washing procedure was thhen repeated
for a total of two washes/rinses. The rinse blank was taken by filling the green bucket with
approximately four liters of DI, pouring the DI from the bucket into the 6b0-ml plastic
beaker and then into the sample bottles.
As on the last two third-party monitoring trips, the DI water used for rinsing and field/rinse
blanks was second-stage DI water (which was finished through the final three columns of the
ion-exchange system).
2.3 SAMPLE PRESERVATION
As discussed above, all samples were unfiltered. Unfiltered groundwater samples were taken
so that metals and cyanide samples were comparable, instead of taking filtered metals
samples and unfiltered cyanide samples. All samples were checked after collection to ensure
that they were preserved to the proper pH. Cyanide samples were preserved with solid
NaOH to pH >_72, and metals samples were preserved with nitric acid to pH Q.
RCG/Hagler, Bailly, inc.
