1
1.0 INTRODUCTION
This report summarizes the results from the fourth third-party monitoring trip to Battle
Mountain Resources, Inc.'s (BMRI) San Luis Gold Project in Costilla County, Colorado,
which took place on May 27 and 28, 1993. The report contains information on: summary
and assessment of sampling activities; summary and assessment of analytical activities, and
recommendations for future sampling. The following documentation and data are included
as appendices in this report: Sampling Observation Documentation, consisting of copies of
field notes (Appendix A); Chain-of-Custody Documentation (Appendix BD; Analytical
Results, consisting of verbatim analytical results from Core Laboratories (Appendix C);
Laboratory Quality Control Report (Appendix D), and Letter from Core Laboratories
regarding reanalysis of samples for Total and WAD cyanide, dated June 23, 1993 (Appendix
E).
2.0 SUMMARY AND ASSESSMENT OF SAMPLING ACTIVI'T'IES
One surface water location, three process points and three groundwater wells were sampled
during the May 27-28, 1993 sampling trip. The sampling locations were: RS-5 in the Rito
Seco Creek; the lower tailings pond; the upper tailings pond, the collection poutd, well M-9,
well M-12 and well M-13. Three field quality control (QC) samples were taken: one field
blank, one rinse blank (taken before collection of the sample from groundwater well M-13),
and one duplicate sample taken at groundwater well M-13. A summary of the types of
samples collected at each location and the analytes determined is provided in Table 1. An
assessment of the sampling activities is provided below.
The weather on May 27 was sunny with temperatures in the 65-70°F range; the weather on
May 28 was cloudy with thunderheads and thunder to the east and west in the afternoon,
with temperatures in the low 70°F range. The water level and flow were muclh higher than
during the April visit. Tailings were being disposed in the upper tailing impoundment on
May 27 when the process points were sampled. Collection pond samples were not as green
as during the April visit, but there was still some precipitate in the cyanide bottles preserved
with sodium hydroxide.
As on previous trips, all samples for cyanide determinations were stored in a zip-lock bag
before putting in coolers to avoid potential cross-contamination of samples. All process
point samples were placed in one cooler; RS-S and blanks were placed in a second cooler,
and the groundwater samples were placed in a third cooler. On this visit matched filtered
and unfiltered samples were not taken at the process points. Only unfiltered samples were
collected at all sampling locations, including the surface water location, process points and
groundwater wells.
RCG/Hagler, Bailly, Inc.
