1 <br /> <br />EFFLUENT MONITORING <br />' A large number of sedimentation control structures at Mine No. 1 and Mine <br />No. 2 are monitored. Of these, only Stations 39, 57, 84 and 87 at Mine No. <br /> 1 and no stations at Mine No. 2 had significant flows in 1988. One of the <br /> sites at Mine No. 2 leas had occasional discharges in recent years while a <br /> few of the other sites at both areas have discharged infrequently during the <br />' period of record. Most of the Mine No. 1 ponds are in the Foidel Creek <br /> drainage, only Pond H (Site 57) is in the Middle Creek drainage. All of the <br />Mine No. 2 ponds are in the Fish Creek drainage. Ponds D (Site 84) and G <br />(Site 55) at Mine No. 1 are effected by the underground operations. Pond D <br />' receives inflow from the underground mine discharge water and the waste rock <br />disposal area as well as runoff from the surface mine. Pond G receives <br />runoff from the surface facilities of the underground and surface mine. <br />Flows <br />The flow rate data for the effluent stations is summarized on Table 56. The <br />historic discharge data for the ponds with significant 1988 water discharges <br />at Mine No. 1 are presented in Figures 42 and 44 through 47. Discharges <br />' from these ponds are effected by the mining activities, seasonal variations, <br /> and spoil springs. All of the plots show the typical seasonal variation <br /> with high flows duri <br />d <br />d i <br />th ng spring runoff. <br />d did <br />t Historically, discharges from the <br />i <br />til <br />b <br />i <br />h <br />i <br /> pon <br />s cease <br />n <br />e summer an <br />no n aga <br />eg <br />n un <br />t <br />e next spr <br />ng. <br /> Three ponds, A (Site 39), D (Site 84) and F (Site 87), began discharging <br /> year-round in late 1984. This is due to the spoil springs located in the <br /> drainages of Ponds A and F and the underground mine discharge to Pond D. In <br />the spring of 1988 Pond D also received some spoil spring discharge. The <br />source of this water appears to be from surface inflow in the waste rock <br />' pond which overflowed into Pond D during the spring. Pond A now leas a base <br />flow of approximately 1.4 cfs, Pond D 0.23 cfs and Pond F 0.1 cfs. These <br />' flows have changed Foidel Creek from an annual to a perennial stream. Peak <br />discharges from the ponds do not seem to have changed significantly because <br />the spoil spring water would have discharged as snowmelt runoff anyway. <br />~~ <br />LI <br /> <br />- 10 - <br />
