Nucle permit boundary. The first survey was conducted during April, 199D, and the second
er
during September, 1990. Both surveys involved visual ohservations for seeps and springs,
and resulted in no discovery of any additional spoil seeps or springs within the surveyed
area.
The field equipment used for sampling conductivity and temperature at the NucLa Mine and
Nucle East mining area (YSI conductivity meter) was tested for accuracy on April 11, 1990.
the Nucle conductivity meter was calibrated by measuring [he conductivity of a 0.01 denial
potassium chloride (KCl) solution at 25.1 degrees C. Based on the conductivity table for
this solution at 25 degree C (YS1, 1979), the conductivity of the solution should
theoretic~el ly be 1408.1 umhos/cm. The Nucle meter registered a conductivity of 1380
mhos/cm, or a 2 percent calibration error.
the meter used to measure field-determined pN values et the Nucla Mine and Nucle East
mining area is cal ibreted by performing two-point calibrations prior to each daily round
of monitoring activities and one-point calibrations prior to each measurement using buffer
solutions of known pH values obtained from outside laboratories. Three buffer solutions
are used for calibration: t) pH 10; 2) pX 7 and 3) pN 4. The buffer solutions are
replaced monthly to ensure accurate calibration of the meter. Most of the two point
calibrations are performed by using the pH 7 and pH 10 buffer solutions, since the pli of
most waters sampled at the Nucla and Nucla East Mines range between 7 and 9 pH units.
However, the lower buffer solution (pH 4) is used for two f>oint calibrations prig- to
measuring water historically known to exhibit pH values less then 7 pH units. One point
calibrations involve using the pH 7 buffer solution.
Table 3 presents the list of~ parameters used to analyze water quality samples obtained at
surface water monitoring sites established et the Nucle Nine and Nucla Eest mining area
during the 1990 water year. This parameter list will be used for analyzing surf ate water
quality samples collected during the 1991 water year.
Baseline Monitorinn Prouram - Nucle East. Surface water monitoring activities conducted
since July of 1986 et monitoring sites established in and around Peabody's proposed wucla
East mining area have been consistent with the approved baseline monitoring program (see
Appendix 15.1, revised Nucla PAP). This program was proposed and outlined in a letter
submitted to Mr. Steve Renner from Peabody personnel on April 21, 1996. Approval of the '
baseline monitoring program for the Nucla East mining areas was issued, with minor
8
